Two major port company from Estonia, Port of Sillamäe and EVR Cargo, took part in the regular meeting of the “Coordinating Council on Transsiberian transportation”, which was held in Beijing. They represented interests of Estonia in the questions of its participation in multimodal transportations. Cargo transit from Asia to Europe by Trans-Siberian railway through Estonian ports is a desired goal for Estonian port companies and country as a whole.

Freights are delivered by Trans-Siberian railway from four Asian directions: China, Japan and Korea, Mongolia and Kazakhstan. The main cargo flow goes through Belarus. However, the transit capacity of Belarus has a serious workload now. It forces carriers to find new transit ways. It gives Estonia hope to direct the transit through their ports.

Infrastructure and range of services of the Estonian ports allow to do this. According to Estonian business, there is a need to move in two directions: the Estonian leaders need to negotiate with Russia and China at the state level, and the Estonian business need to negotiate directly with Asian suppliers.
