Cargo carriage volume increases, but only slightly

The volume of cargo transportation in Estonia by rail and maritime traffic increased in aggregate by 12% in 2017. However, the pre-crisis level of 2007 will not be achieved soon.

The delivery of goods by rail within the country showed the highest increase, exports to other areas of the European Union also grew, but the volume of transit traffic continued to decline — by almost 5% over the past year. The main reason of this fall is changes in the routes of petroleum products transportation from Russia. But it is the raw materials - shale, oil, wood – that make up the bulk of the goods transported by rail of Estonia.

The number of cargo operations and the volume of transported goods in sea harbors increased slightly. The reason is the same, development of new ports in the North of Russia leads to the redistribution of cargo flows. Estonian operators have to compensate for the volumes by consolidated goods and fertilizer transhipment.
