Estonia has signed a contract for the production of a new type of authentication cards with the world leader in the field of embedded digital security Oberthur Technologies. They will be equipped with devices for non-contact information reading.

The change of the manufacturer occurred after revealing a lot of shortcomings in the previous versions of not only ID-cards, but also electronic identity documents confirming the residence permit and so on. Government agencies had to revoke the cards to avoid massive identity theft.

New items will appear in Estonia in the autumn of this year. The changes will affect the built-in chip, it will be possible to store much more information. The technology of data decoding, when reading using the public key, will also be improved. Due to this, the ID-card will be able to combine a ticket for travel in transport, a medical card with an indication of acute diseases, and other information in the future. It is noted that confirmation of the electronic signature, as before, will take place using a contact chip.
