Port operator Vopak is going to build a terminal for transshipment of liquefied gas in Muuga port (Estonia)
Publishedо 9 September, 2017
The Vopak company as the operator of port terminals in the Baltics plans to begin construction of the LNG (liquefied natural gas) terminal in Muuga port in the fall of this year. The company has four terminals for liquid fuel in this port, but the terminal for transshipment of liquefied natural gas is a new project for the operator.
The Vopak company plans to build the new terminal in several stages. The first one should be completed in two years when the terminal of four thousand cubic meters will be constructed. The cost of this phase will amount to 25 million euros.
If the company executes its plans, the terminal for transshipment of liquefied gas in Muuga will be the second in the Baltic region. The first and so far the only (until the construction of the Estonian terminal) LNG terminal operates in Lithuania. However, the European Commission refused to accept the Lithuanian LNG terminal as the regional one.
Estonia expects that the future LNG terminal in Muuga will receive a status of the regional one. Estonia expectations are based on the research conducted by the European Commission, which called the Gulf of Finland as the best location for the regional LNG terminal.
The Muuga port, which is a part of the Tallinn port, is situated on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, and it does not freeze all year round and in addition to the maritime traffic with the whole world, has direct access to the Estonian and Russian Railways. Therefore, the expectations of Estonian for regional status of the planned LNG terminal are justified.
