The state railway operator of Estonia AS Operail together with the Latvian DiGas plan to develop the first diesel locomotive powered by liquefied natural gas in the region for transportation of goods. Wide-scale introduction is planned to begin at the end of 2020.

The new model of traction rolling stock will have a combined fuel tank system, which will allow to use both diesel fuel and LNG. This solution will reduce the amount of fuel consumed by the locomotive by 30%, while minimize emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere.
