The first boundary pillar is placed in a rural municipality Misso Parish. Against the backdrop of cooling of international relations with Russia, Estonia decided to begin border management without waiting for the ratification of boundary treaties. The Estonian parliament will discuss the bill on ratification on November 25 only, so the first officially established boundary pillar was assigned №2. Pillar №1 will be placed only after the border treaty with Russia will be ratified.

In total on 338.6 kilometers of land-based Estonian-Russian border area it is planned to install 760 pillars and 167 buoys. Total costs associated with creation of a border between Russia and Estonia will comprise about 79 million euros.
